Extra Eclipses In 2020 Signal Change

One of the biggest indicators that 2020 will be different from other years is the number of eclipses that will occur.

Typically, we experience four eclipses per year, two solar and two lunar. Eclipses generally arrive in sets of two, with a solar and a lunar in each set, and two sets occurring in a given year, about five and a half months apart.

In 2020, we’ll see six eclipses. These extra eclipses signal change.

2020 Eclipses List

Here’s a list of the 2020 eclipses:

Lunar eclipses coincide with full Moons, while solar eclipses arrive at the new Moon phase.

A set of eclipses usually consists of one each in opposite zodiac signs, for example, Cancer and Capricorn.

Eclipses Changing To Different Zodiac Signs

Notice that half the 2020 eclipses will occur in Sagittarius and Gemini, while the other half will occur in Cancer and Capricorn. This mix indicates we’re in an overlap period, when the eclipses are shifting from the Cancer-Capricorn polarity to the Gemini-Sagittarius one.

Also notice that four of these events will be lunar eclipses, while two will be solar ones.

Eclipses Bring Change

Eclipses bring change. Not all of them will affect you personally, although you may see their effects on people around you and in the world at large as major events. A particular eclipse tends to be important in your life if it occurs in a sign that’s highlighted in your chart (such as your Sun sign or rising sign) or if it happens in a degree that’s sensitive in your chart (such as 12 degrees of Aquarius, for example, if you have planets at or close to 12 degrees in Aquarius or around 12 degrees in any of the other fixed signs).

About Lunar Eclipses

In general, lunar eclipses bring closure or endings. Think of them as doors closing so you can move on to something more appropriate to your level of development, much as the doors of elementary school close to you once you move on to middle school. At that point, you’re ready to move on, and it’s time for change.

If you’re a Cancer or have Cancer as your rising sign or midheaven, or if the Moon is prominent in your chart, you may feel lunar eclipse energies more strongly. It’s helpful to clear your schedule around these times so you can process whatever emotions come up for you.

About Solar Eclipses

As for solar eclipses, they tend to bring new beginnings. Think of them as doors opening so you can have new adventures, meet new people, and grow more fully into your potential.

If you’re a Leo, or you have Leo as your rising sign, Moon sign, or midheaven, or if the Sun is highlighted in your chart, you may feel solar eclipses strongly, regardless of the sign in which they occur. Slow down and pay attention to what comes up for you around these times and give yourself time to meditate so you can apply whatever you learn to create something new.

Eclipses Will Close Out The Old, Bring In The New

With so many lunar eclipses in 2020, it’s likely we’ll experience events that help us close out the old in our lives. It’s as if we have double the number of chances to get this right by letting go of what has run its course.

By allowing ourselves to move on from what we’ve outgrown, or what no longer serves us or creates the highest good for everyone, we can enter new and better territory.

The solar eclipses will help us do exactly that, by opening opportunities to embrace the new. Mark your calendar for the December 14 solar eclipse in Sagittarius, a total solar eclipse that’s likely to bring some fireworks – and big opportunities.

Lunar Nodes Change Signs, Set New Goals

The lunar nodes are two points in space where the Moon’s orbit crosses what’s called the ecliptic - that is, the circle formed by the Sun’s apparent path through the sky during the year, as it makes its way through all 12 zodiac signs.

The North Node and South Node

The nodes consist of the North Node and the South Node, and they sit 180 degrees apart on this big circle in the sky. That means they always occupy opposite signs of the zodiac.

The North Node indicates our best opportunity to evolve into a better future. The sign it occupies tells us the areas of life and types of activity that require our focus. Usually, we need to stretch beyond what's comfortable to grow into the path indicated by the North Node.

The South Node indicates the past, either past accomplishments and learnings or past deeds returning for healing or compensation due to karmic factors. Here is where we reckon with ourselves and move away from what we’ve outgrown or whatever holds us back. South Node activities, emotions, or people might feel familiar - and seem easier - than what's at the North Node. Yet we have to grow beyond familiar paths, even as we use their best features to support North Node growth.

Nodes Are Related To Eclipses

The nodes are related to solar and lunar eclipses because an eclipse can occur only when the Moon crosses the ecliptic. The nodes occupy a set of signs for about a year and a half, after which they slip backward in the zodiac into a new set of signs.

Nodes Will Enter Gemini-Sagittarius

On May 4, the lunar nodes will change signs from Cancer-Capricorn to Gemini-Sagittarius. That means the North Node will leave Cancer for Gemini, and the South Node will leave Capricorn for Sagittarius.

During the Cancer-Capricorn period, which began in November 2018, we entered a time when our best interests were served by embracing Cancer themes such as emotional security, food and nourishment, the needs of mothers and children, and the face of feminine power. At the same time, it became a season for reforming Capricorn energies that have been misdirected, such as reforming government and corporations, balancing male energies with female ones, and overcoming workaholism and ambitions that lack a human or heartfelt motivation.

When the nodes switch to Gemini-Sagittarius, that’s our signal to set new goals. We can evolve by bringing the best of Gemini into our lives and the world.

We’ll need greater focus on communication, education, gadgets and technology, siblings, local travel, and playfulness. Also, we’ll need to heal any imbalances or move beyond what we’ve outgrown in Sagittarian areas such as higher education, religious dogma, international relations, global travel, and philosophy.

'No Retrogrades' Periods – Full Speed Ahead!

We’ll have help in making the changes we must implement.

In 2020, we’ll have two “no retrogrades” periods, when none of the planets will be retrograde. Note these times in your calendar and make the most of them because they’ll be perfect for putting plans in motion and taking action to overcome obstacles.

Here are the "no retrogrades" periods for 2020:

  • January 11 – February 16
  • March 10 – April 24

Plan ahead and use these times well because 2020 has extra retrogrades we don’t see too often. If you can initiate projects or plans early in the year, you’ll be glad you did once the major Venus and Mars retrogrades arrive later in the year.

See how to use the 'no retrogrades' time best with a forecast report:

Venus Retrograde – Where Is The Love?

In 2020, we’ll experience Venus retrograde, when it will appear as if Venus is moving backwards through the sky.

Love planet Venus goes retrograde only about every 18 months, for about six weeks. The last time she went retrograde was October 5 through November 16, 2018.

2020 Venus Retrograde Dates

During 2020, Venus will go retrograde in Gemini from May 13 through June 25.

Track this period on your calendar because a Venus retrograde affects all things governed by this planet, including love, relationships, the arts, beauty, and finances.

For more on Venus retrograde dates, see these other articles:

How Venus Retrograde Affects You

During Venus retrograde, we may wonder “where is the love?” It’s as if Venus has left the building, denying us her charms and powers. She will return, of course, once the retrograde lifts, but during her time away we have to fend for ourselves.

In Gemini, Venus bestows a playful, youthful, lighthearted love. While she’s retrograde here, life may feel heavy, and we may not be in any kind of mood for playing. Laughter may seem in short supply, or else it may feel unkind if it’s directed toward us personally.

How To Use Venus Retrograde

So how can you use Venus retrograde times?

It’s best not to start an important relationship during this time or begin trying to meet people through a dating service or networking. Instead, spend time with old friends or look up people from the past.

Also, use the time to reflect on relationships, especially communications with others. How well do you communicate? Do you speak up about your needs? Do you listen to others? Also, do you behave maturely in relationships, or do you need to grow up a bit in how you relate to people?

Compare your communication style at work and at home. Do you need to take a course on how to communicate more effectively on the job? Or see a therapist or counselor to interact more kindly with loved ones?

As for financials, reconsider spending for Gemini objects such as phones, computers, and gadgets of all kinds. You may realize you need to rethink budgets, especially if money feels tighter than usual. Venus retrograde in Gemini also is an opportunity to consider spending related to travel, gifts for brothers and sisters, education, books and other learning materials, and entertainment.

Venus Will Spend Extra Time In Gemini

Whatever you experience, you’ll have plenty of opportunity to make adjustments based on what you learn.

Venus typically travels quickly through the zodiac, spending a bit more than three weeks in a given sign. Because of its retrograde this year, however, Venus will spend extra time in Gemini.

In 2020, Venus will be in Gemini from April 3 through August 7, giving us four months to work with its energies in this sign. That means you’ll have several weeks after the retrograde to enjoy Venus’s many charms and extend them in all things Gemini.

This placement is particularly significant because the Moon's north node will enter Gemini on May 4, where it will stay for a year and a half. That factor will increase our need to focus on Gemini themes so we can make progress once the Venus retrograde ends.

Mars Retrograde – Nothing’s Happening!

In 2020, we’ll also see Venus’s lover, warrior planet Mars, go retrograde.

Mars goes retrograde the least often of the planets, moving in apparent backward motion about once each two years for about two months. The last time Mars was retrograde was June 26 through August 27, 2018.

2020 Mars Retrograde Dates

In 2020, Mars will go retrograde from September 9 until November 13.

During this period, Mars will be in Aries, the sign it rules, so this retrograde will pack a much more powerful punch than usual.

How Mars Retrograde Affects You

As a warrior, Mars wants to be active, engaging with the world and winning battles (or besting the competition in sports or business – or just about anything).

Mars gives us drive and focus, pushing us to get up and go – and win.

When Mars is retrograde, all that energy evaporates. We lose the sense of feeling driven to achieve, and it seems harder to get things done.

This experience can cause frustration and anger. With Mars in fiery, "I want it now!" Aries, that possibility will increase, so note the retrograde dates on your calendar and make a point to stay aware of your own emotions and alert to possible aggression from others who may not realize why they feel so frustrated.

Although this scenario may feel daunting, it’s possible to leverage a Mars retrograde to your advantage if you know how to go about it.

How To Use Mars Retrograde

First, when Mars goes retrograde (and even in the days or weeks leading up to it, as this planet slows down and life draws to a halt), accept what’s happening. Mars retrograde is a gift and a great opportunity if we see it for what it is and shift our usual mode of living.

Rather than pushing full steam ahead, give yourself a time out. Slow down, do less, and stop pushing, because force will backfire while finesse can succeed.

Carry on with tasks you must do, but accept that you may need extra time to complete them. Also, avoid starting anything new. Instead, dust off old dreams and projects and see if you still want to work on them. Also, take this time to review everything you “do” – and why. You may realize you’re continuing to perform certain actions or support various ventures without really enjoying them.

Mars Will Spend Extra Time In Aries

Keep a journal or notebook about your experiences with Mars retrograde. Notice whatever you experience, and when Mars moves forward again, apply what you learned to improve your life.

Mars generally takes about two months to travel through a sign. Because of its retrograde this year, however, Mars will spend extra time in Aries. That’s good news, because Mars LOVES being in Aries. After the retrograde, you’ll have plenty of time to get going on projects and plans – and you’ll be smarter from slowing down and reflecting.

In this case, Mars will travel through Aries from June 27, 2020, through January 6, 2021, with the retrograde in effect from September 9 through November 13.

Start planning now so you can slow down during the retrograde. You might want to take your vacation in this period, and if you manage a department or run a business, help your employees handle this period by recommending they take vacation time, too.

After the slowdown, you'll feel refreshed and ready to move ahead forcefully as Mars gets back up to speed toward the end of 2020.

Mercury Retrograde: Analyze Feelings

As it does every year, Mercury will go retrograde multiple times in 2020.

Each Mercury retrograde will occur primarily in water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces).

Find out where you have these three water signs in your birth chart with a personalized horoscope report:

Click For Horoscope Report

As a planet concerned with the mind and thought, Mercury can feel uncomfortable in the water signs, which focus on feelings, consciousness, and the oneness of all existence. When it’s retrograde in those signs, it can grow even more uncomfortable, as its usual powers of quick thinking, sparkling wit, and breezy communication seem to disappear in a fog of feelings.

One area where Mercury excels, though, is analysis. And a retrograde is a great time to analyze as we rethink, review, rework, revise, and all the other “re” words that spell going back over old ground to improve matters.

One of the most useful ways to approach this year’s Mercury retrograde periods will be to turn our minds inward to study what we feel and why – and then consider what we think about that.

If you’re an air sign who lives in your head, you’ll be called to get out of that comfortable space and go deep inside to look at emotional issues. If you’re a dramatic fire sign, you’ll have an opportunity to study your feelings so you can avoid imposing them on others when emotions run high. And if you’re an earth sign, Mercury’s turn through the water element will help you bring more heart into your ever practical projects. And finally, if you’re a water sign, Mercury will help you become more compassionate, bringing intelligence to your feeling nature and helping you express emotions more eloquently in words so you can interact better with others.

Here are the Mercury retrograde dates and signs for 2020:

  • February 16 – March 9 in Pisces (and a bit of Aquarius at the end)
  • June 18 – July 12 in Cancer
  • October 13 – November 3 in Scorpio (and a bit of Libra at the end)

These periods will be good for journaling and meditation – as well as the usual slowing down to notice your experiences. If you face difficult emotional depths and feel you need help navigating them, consider working with a therapist.

Jupiter In Capricorn Almost All Year – Your Biggest Opportunities

Jupiter, the biggest planet in our solar system, left its home sign of Sagittarius December 2, 2019, when it entered Capricorn.

Jupiter will stay in Capricorn almost all year, until December 19, 2020.

Jupiter tells us where to find our biggest opportunities. It’s a planet associated with luck, optimism, and generosity, so wherever it goes, it brings these gifts to help enrich and improve us.

In Capricorn, Jupiter can feel a bit uncomfortable because Capricorn is restrictive and limiting, and Jupiter simply wants to grow, expand, and have adventures (preferably all over the world).

In 2020, we can harness Jupiter’s joy and make something great with it if we remember to channel its energies into practical projects, necessary enterprises, and worthy ambitions. Your best bet for growth and satisfaction this year will come from getting down to business in all areas of life – but holding a grand vision in mind to stay the course and stay inspired while you work patiently and methodically.

Saturn In Capricorn Almost All Year – Build And Consolidate!

Saturn in Capricorn has become a familiar energy by now.

Saturn entered Capricorn, the sign it rules (and therefore the one it loves to spend time in), December 19, 2018. It will stay there until March 21, 2020, when it will give us a preview of its next stop, Aquarius, by spending time there from March 21 through July 1, 2020.

Then Saturn goes back into Capricorn from July 1 through December 16, 2020, when it leaves Capricorn for good and settles into Aquarius until 2023.

Saturn In Capricorn

Saturn feels strong and capable in its home sign of Capricorn, making it easier to tap its energies. This planet is a stern taskmaster who expects us to work hard, be patient, and take everything step by step (without skipping any steps!).

To Saturn, grand visions are nothing if there’s no practical plan for turning them into reality. Our job is to take our dreams seriously, work out a way to ground them in material reality, and then get to work making that happen.

With Saturn in Capricorn, that job is a bit easier because Saturn feels at home and inclined to show us the upside of patience and hard work. Typically, Saturn rewards us only at the end of our strivings, but in Capricorn, this planet helps us learn that the strivings can be the reward – as long as we avoid workaholism (and self-sabotaging coping mechanisms such as addiction, escapism, and ruthlessness).

Build And Consolidate

Under a Saturn period, we need to build. That can mean building a business (a favorite Saturn occupation) or a family or a house or a garden. But build we must, and the structure must be sound so it can stand firm over time.

To succeed, we have to consolidate. That means letting go of relationships and activities that aren’t serving our highest purpose. It also means shedding belongings (and perhaps pounds, in order to get to our “fighting weight”) so life is lighter and resources become consolidated, organized, and efficient. Letting go frees us so we can do our work without distractions.

In the Saturn School Of Life, the way we do things and the journey we take to reach our goals matter. When we operate with purpose and integrity, the entire process can become enjoyable - an ongoing reward. Then, when we finish something worthwhile, we reap even more rewards: greater skills and even mastery, a spirit of accomplishment, and a tangible “something” that can exist in the world and serve the greater good in some way.

How To Tune In To Saturn, Capricorn Energies

Pluto Meets Saturn, Jupiter – Where’s Your Power?

2020 also will bring concerns related to power - and how we wield it - to the forefront, as some major players meet with powerhouse Pluto in Capricorn.

Pluto And Saturn

On January 12, Saturn will reach the same degree of Capricorn occupied by Pluto, fusing these two planets’ considerable energies. Notice what happens on or around this date, both in your life and the world.

Saturn reveres structure and the material expression of our ideals through whatever we build, while Pluto has no qualms about tearing something down to rebuild it so it reflects the soul’s requirements. Although Pluto often has the last word, he’s a guest in Saturn’s house because both are in Capricorn, ruled by Saturn. So the ringed planet may have the upper hand in whatever happens but nevertheless will need to acquiesce to Plutonian mandates for change.

Check your birth chart to see where you have Capricorn to get a sense of where this planetary drama will play out in your life.

Pluto And Jupiter

Pluto and Jupiter will experience a triple conjunction this year – a phenomenon in which two planets meet in the same degree of a sign, then meet again in that sign due to the faster planet's retrograde motion, and then meet a third time as the faster planet ends its retrograde and overtakes the slower planet.

That means Pluto and Jupiter will form a conjunction, with both in the same degree of Capricorn, three times in close succession.

These Pluto-Jupiter conjunctions will occur on these dates:

  • April 4
  • June 29
  • November 12

Jupiter will bring optimism and exuberance to this pairing, and Pluto will offer the soul mandate to dig deeply and enter the darkness to see the truth. By holding to the higher nature of both planets, we have a unique opportunity to harness their tremendous power to heal old wounds and create a new vision for the future that’s both inspiring and practical.

With both planets in Capricorn, we’ll have the motivation to get started and the patience to see things through so we can make that vision a reality.

Jupiter Meets Saturn – A New (Aquarian!) Era Begins Dec. 21

One of the most important planetary meetings coming up in 2020 is Jupiter’s conjunction with Saturn.

On December 16, 2020, Saturn finally will leave its home sign, Capricorn, when it enters Aquarius. Saturn will stay in this fixed air sign until March 7, 2023.

On December 19, 2020, Jupiter will leave Capricorn as well, when it moves into Aquarius.

This pair will make history when Jupiter reaches the exact degree in Aquarius as Saturn on December 21, 2020. (Incidentally, that’s the same day as the Solstice, as the Sun will enter Capricorn that day.)

On so many levels, December 21, 2020, will be a day to remember.

Jupiter + Saturn = Grand Conjunction

Whenever Jupiter and Saturn come together in the same degree of the same sign of the zodiac, they form what’s called a grand conjunction. (Sometimes called a “great conjunction.”)

In astrology, these two planets are called the “social planets” because their energies direct us toward relationships in the greater world, beyond our home or personal associations. Both are associated with large institutions, which automatically drives us into interactions with other people, such as in our community, city, or nation (and the world).

Jupiter and Saturn form a grand conjunction about every 20 years. Grand conjunctions signal the start of changes in society that affect culture, beliefs, politics, and economics.

The Aquarian Age Begins In 2020

Because Jupiter and Saturn will meet in Aquarius during 2020, we can see the coming 20-year era as a major shift into the Aquarian Age.

Shifting into any new age, which lasts about 2,160 years, occurs gradually, but along the way we encounter turning points that push us more strongly into the new era and away from the old way of doing things.

Look back at how your life, community, and nation have evolved since the last grand conjunction, which occurred in May, 2000, in Taurus. This earth sign set the tone for the following 20 years, driving the human culture to focus on material concerns such as money, security, and values (and valuables). This period also has seen greater concern about the Earth and nature, as Taurus is the sign associated with planet Earth.

Taurus is a fixed sign, so this past 20 years may have felt a little stuck, or people and governments may have been stubborn about creating security or conservative in spending or investments.

Aquarius is a fixed sign, too, but it’s also an air sign. It prizes freedom, yet paradoxically can tend to want to fix others or tell them the best way to live. Uranus, which rules Aquarius, currently is moving through Taurus, so we may see some of the same concerns we’ve witnessed for a while – but we’ll likely have new ideas on how to address them. (Find out more about Uranus in Taurus in my article, Uranus In Taurus 2018 - 2025.)

Unusual ideas and futuristic thinking will become more common. It’s time to think outside the box – and even let go of the box!

Tune in to Aquarius energies with my article Aquarius Time: Awaken To Inner Wisdom. Also, use The Aquarius Meditation to harmonize both your inner and outer selves with the Aquarian Age and its mandate for humanitarian ideals, philanthropic actions, and a new era of friendship among all humanity and between humans and all other life forms.

The Great Air Mutation – What You Think DOES Matter!

The grand conjunction of 2020 is much more than yet another new era in history.

It really is the start of something big and different: the great air mutation.

Like everything else in astrology, each grand conjunction (the every 20 years meeting of Jupiter and Saturn) is part of a much longer cycle.

Grand Conjunctions In Fire: Revolutions, Worldwide Change

Starting in 1603, Jupiter and Saturn began forming grand conjunctions in fire signs. They continued these fiery meetings until 1802 (with one exception – in 1643, they met in the water sign Pisces).

These alignments ushered in a 200 year period of revolutions (including the French and American Revolutions) and other worldwide change that remade the social order, world trade, and the arts.

Grand Conjunctions In Earth: 200 Years Of Material Concerns

In 1802, Jupiter and Saturn began forming grand conjunctions in earth signs, when they met in Virgo.

This earthy period coincided with the height of the industrial revolution, more focus on physical and scientific change, and unprecedented material prosperity for more people around the globe. It also ushered in a more practical and hierarchical energy (such as multinational corporations) to consolidate power and resources.

Two Element Exceptions: Fire And Air

In 1842, these planets united in the fire sign Aries, after which they returned to earth sign conjunctions.

Then, in 1980 and 1981, they met in Libra, an air sign. They emphasized the air element in those years by conjoining in Libra not once but three times, due to each planet’s retrograde motion.

The Great Air Mutation

As of December 21, 2020, Jupiter and Saturn will launch what’s called “the great air mutation” by entering a period when their grand conjunctions occur in air signs.

After the grand conjunction in Aquarius, these two social planets will conjoin in air signs (Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius) at 20-year intervals through 2140, bringing in an age characterized strongly by developments related to the air element and the three astrological air signs.

In December, 2159, they will meet in the water sign Scorpio, followed by two more air alignments in 2179 and 2199, before shifting to water and earth energies for a long period (including a Capricorn triple conjunction – when they come together three times in a row in a very short period in the sign Capricorn in 2238 and 2239).

What You Think DOES Matter

With such a strong emphasis on air, we’ll all have ways to learn that what you think does matter. Literally.

Air is associated with communication, lightness, and the mind. Many sages have said we become what we think, and humans have begun realizing this truth more and more in recent decades.

During the air period over the next two centuries, thoughts and how we use them will become even more powerful. What we think about potentially could materialize more quickly, showing us how to guard our thoughts in order to create outer conditions that match our highest good.

The best way to use this time will be to harness our thoughts to focus on ideals, progress, and helping others. In particular, new ideas about humanitarianism, intellectual freedom, friendship, and social groups and organizations will prosper.

Also, great awakenings are possible for all of us on the inner plane. We can prime the pump for “eureka!” moments by meditating regularly and engaging in prayer and visualization – both excellent uses of the mind and our thoughts.
