Beautiful balsamic Moon, the most mysterious of all the Moon's phases, thank you for giving us the gift of stillness.

Balsamic Moon Ends Every Lunar Cycle

Do you know about the balsamic Moon?

It's the phase that ends every lunar cycle, every single month.

While many Moon calendars talk about four Moon phases (new, first quarter, full, and last quarter), our celestial satellite actually undergoes a steady, subtle series of eight phases each month.

The last of those, the eighth, is the balsamic Moon.

The Eight Moon Phases

Here are the eight Moon phases, in order:

  • New Moon
  • Crescent Moon
  • First Quarter Moon
  • Gibbous Moon
  • Full Moon
  • Disseminating Moon
  • Last Quarter Moon
  • Balsamic Moon

The first several phases are part of the Moon's waxing period, when it appears to grow and increase in light until it forms a fully illuminated circle at the full Moon.

The last phases form the Moon's waning period, when it gradually appears smaller, less round, and ultimately disappears from view for a bit at the "dark of the Moon" before the new Moon becomes visible to us on Earth as a sliver of a silver crescent.

Moon Phases: A Powerful Story Of Light

This series of Moon phases traces a powerful story of light that we see played out monthly.

As with anything new (a seed, an idea, a project, a process - even a person), a lack of information (or light, wisdom, or insight) makes the fledgling manifestation fragile, mysterious, not fully known. It's still in the dark period of newness, especially with a seed, which germinates underground before erupting into the light later on.

With experience (symbolically, the increased light in the waxing Moon phases), comes some recognition of what we actually have on our hands or are trying to grow. As the process goes on, we generally reach an "aha!" moment (symbolized by the full Moon's fully round shape and great light), realizing an idea's true potential or a project's actual purpose and best structure or development process.

Then, as the process continues, we may encounter challenges (symbolized by the last quarter Moon) when sharing our work with others and have to decide whether to carry on with our project (likely with alterations) or set it aside.

By the time we reach the final stage, the balsamic Moon period, the work is done for now, we've learned much, and it's time to rest and reflect before setting off once again at the next new Moon.

Balsamic Moon's Essential Power

And that is the essential power of the beautiful balsamic Moon phase: permission to stop, rest, and review.

With so little external light at balsamic Moon time, our job consists of going within to commune with the inner light, which will be greater now that we have some experience during the earlier Moon phases.

    1. Hello, Jan. Thanks for visiting and getting in touch. Also, thanks for catching the "am/pm" discrepancy - we've updated the Cancer new Moon time to p.m. Also, the time you mentioned is correct for the U.S. eastern time zone. FYI: All times on the Astrologer Anne site are listed in the U.S. central time zone, so the 9:53 p.m. time given in the chart here (and times elsewhere) are correct for the central time zone. In all cases, if you live in the eastern zone, add an hour to any time listed on the site. Thanks again for writing. Best wishes, and enjoy all the Moon's many phases.
