July Astrology – Headline News
Your Communication, Travel, And Siblings
July opens with a lone planet in Cancer, the warm and powerful Sun, who always shines his light freely and generously to bring joy and optimism to our world.
The Moon will join the Sun in Cancer from July 11 through 13, giving greater sensitivity to general energies before the Sun changes signs on July 22.
Cancer is a water sign symbolized by the Crab, a soft and mysterious creature of land and water who carries her home, a hard shell, with her wherever she goes. Crabs are famous for moving sideways before making their move to grab what they seek, hanging on tightly with their enormous claws. The Cancer Crab mixes a soft, emotional inside and tough outside. With a secure home base, we can let our sensitive inner selves show and release the fear that may prompt us to hold on to feelings, people, and things we no longer need. When in balance, Cancer bestows precious gifts of memory and imagination that feed our creativity and allow us to share it with the world.
Find out more about Cancer in my article, Cancer Time: Feel And Change. Also, you can tune in to this sign’s watery mystery and sensitive imagination with The Cancer Meditation, an uplifting guided meditation.
For you, Taurus, planets in Cancer always activate your third house of communication, brothers and sisters, and travel within your local area or to nearby places. The Cancer planets this month can help you use your sensitivity to tune in to others’ words, gestures, and body language so you can understand what they’re really trying to communicate and then respond with emotional as well as intellectual understanding. These energies also may inspire you to invite brothers and sisters to your house for a meal you prepare yourself or take a short trip, perhaps to a place you enjoyed in the past, especially in childhood.
Your Home And Family
On July 22, the Sun leaves Cancer for Leo, which will start the month of the Lion. You’ll feel the energies shift from the emotional, imaginative power of Cancer to the heartfelt, regal world of Leo. This annual change brings a welcome warmth, charisma, and desire to show off our talents after Cancer and its brooding emotions and tendency to remain at home with its family and memories.
For you, Taurus, planets in Leo always activate your fourth house of home, family, parents, and real estate. They increase your passion to spend time with family, research your genealogy, feel more secure by creating a stable home, or see your parents. This area also governs the strong foundation you enjoy through having a spiritual base. As soon as the Sun enters Leo, you may feel an urge to call a parent, decrease commitments to spend more time with loved ones, repair or remodel your home, or invest in real estate.
Each year brings two sets of eclipses, six months apart. Typically, each eclipse period features a solar eclipse and a lunar eclipse; sometimes an extra eclipse may occur at these times, depending on planetary alignments. This year, we will have a third eclipse in the current set; it will happen next month. Check next month’s horoscopes for details.
An eclipse happens either at a full Moon, giving us a lunar eclipse, or a new Moon, giving us a solar eclipse.
Eclipses help speed our progress, both on the spiritual plane and the material plane, because they ramp up the power of the new or full Moon involved. They may bring dramatic news and changes to our lives if they occur in a sign and degree of the zodiac already highlighted in your birth chart.
Lunar eclipses typically point us toward the past: we see something come full circle or reach a conclusion. Solar eclipses point us toward the future: we see a door opening that leads us toward something new.
This month brings a partial solar eclipse in Cancer, 20 degrees, at the new Moon on July 12. It also features a total lunar eclipse in Aquarius, 4 degrees, at the full Moon on July 27. (NOTE: Next month will bring a solar eclipse on August 11 at 18 degrees of Leo.)
For you, Taurus, the July 12 eclipse may bring news or a fresh start in something related to your third house of communication, brothers and sisters, early education, and travel, while the July 27 eclipse may spark news or closure related to your career, a parent, your reputation or legacy, or an award or other recognition.
Slow Down: Mars Remains Retrograde
As last month’s horoscope explained, Mars will be retrograde all this month. Similar to Mercury retrograde, this phenomenon will coincide with a slowdown that gives us time to pause, reflect, and redo. Mars will continue its apparent backward motion for two months, until August 27.
See your June horoscope for more details on how Mars retrograde affects you.
Mercury Retrograde: Slow Down Some More
On July 26, Mercury will go retrograde once again, adding to Mars’s messages to slow down.
From our vantage point on Earth, it will look like Mercury is moving backwards in the sky. Although it won’t actually be moving in reverse, this Mercury retrograde period will feel like all that is associated with Mercury will be in low gear or moving backwards.
Mercury rules everything related to communication, from computers and cell phones to speaking, writing, and listening. It also governs anything with moving parts, such as electronics, cars, and appliances.
When Mercury goes retrograde, generally three times a year for three weeks at a time, the areas it rules also slow down and often experience challenges.
This retrograde occurs in Leo, a passionate fire sign that can create drama when frustrated by the inevitable surprises or obstacles that occur during a retrograde.
Prepare now by backing up your computer and other devices and updating software by mid-July. After that, you’ll begin to feel the slowdown and may see issues arise with equipment or interactions with other people.

Plan Your Month: Important Dates In July
This month brings several key dates to watch as you plan your month. Mark your calendar and take action (or rest) as recommended on the dates listed here so your efforts can bring progress in all areas.
July 5: The Sun in your communication area aligns beautifully with Jupiter in your partnership house, so if you need to speak with your spouse or business partner about something sensitive, bring it up now and speak with warmth from your heart. Also, Mercury in your home and real estate house faces off against Mars in your career area, suggesting family members may object to something related to your career or that you may have challenges juggling home and work. Do your best to balance demands from others along with your own needs.
July 8: The Sun makes another flowing angle, this time with Neptune in your friends and networking house. Call a friend who works in the arts and plan a cultural outing together, volunteer for an arts group’s fundraiser, or accept an invitation to a networking event where you can meet someone in the dance or film world.
July 9: Mercury in your house of home will challenge Jupiter in your partnership house, suggesting you and your spouse may disagree about home improvements, inviting someone such as a student or other young person to live with you, or how to help a parent or other relative. Also, loving Venus enters Virgo in your children, romance, and creativity house. Return to a hobby or art practice or take up a new pastime. If you have young children, take time to play together or do a joint art project; if they’re grown, call them to chat or meet you for dinner. Venus also will inspire you to indulge your spirit of fun by going to parties, concerts, and other gatherings; if you’re unattached, accept invitations, as your beauty can win you an admirer.
July 9 – 12: The Moon enters its balsamic phase, the “dark of the Moon” time before the new Moon. Slow down and review the past month since the new Moon that arrived on June 13. Meditate, rest, and reflect on what you want to do in the coming month. Find out more about this mysterious monthly time in my Balsamic Moon Phase article. Also, this period is excellent for spiritual work, meditation, and prayer. See my article on How To Relieve Stress – Meditate At The Right Time for details.
July 10: Jupiter ends its retrograde in your partnerships house, giving you a green light to move forward on marriage planning that you’ve had in process for a while, expanding your vision for a business partnership, or meeting with an expert to review business agreements. You also may talk with your spouse about taking an overseas trip or exploring life’s mysteries through spiritual study or meditation.
July 11: Venus in your creativity house makes a flowing alignment with Uranus in your personality house. You can put your unique personal stamp on a creative project, and your forward thinking approach may earn you accolades for an exceptional body of work. This pairing also may inspire you to think outside your usual box for maintaining health, perhaps by taking up competitive dance or joining a master gardening team.
July 12: A new Moon in Cancer arrives with a partial solar eclipse, signaling a new start in something related to your brothers and sisters, neighbors or community, communication, thinking style, or travel. Yet the Sun will face off against mighty Pluto in your other travel house, which also governs higher education, suggesting you can benefit by waiting to plan a trip, apply for college, work on a visa or immigration issue, or send sensitive communications of any kind because officials or other authorities may challenge or undermine you. If you wait, you will find the coming week and a half helpful for the new starts you desire.
July 13: Venus in your children house connects harmoniously with Saturn in your higher education area, netting you support from educational or international leaders for a child’s college or study abroad opportunities. If you’re seeking broad publicity or international opportunities for your creative work, this planetary connection could provide the support you’ve wished for.
July 22: The Sun leaves Cancer for Leo, energizing your fourth house of home, family, real estate, and spiritual foundation. Enjoy the next month’s playful, passionate energies. Also, Venus in your pleasures and parties house makes a helpful alignment with Jupiter in your partnership house, suggesting you and a business partner may reach agreement on a creative project or a new product for children. Or you and your marriage partner may be invited to an upscale event such as a concert or gallery opening; if so, go and have a great time and take any other opportunities in coming weeks to enjoy fun.
July 24: Venus faces off against Neptune in your networking house, so if you’re going to business mixers to drum up support for a project or your creative talent, take promises with a grain of salt and dig for facts once this energy passes. This alignment also may bring confusion related to a charity or fundraiser, especially related to your child’s school, so practice patience and follow up in a day or two.
July 25: The Sun in your house of home squares off against Uranus in your personality house. Your unusual ideas for remodeling or moving may conflict with family members’ desires, so table discussions and exercise care to avoid control issues with others.
July 26: The Sun in Leo challenges Mars, across the sky in Aquarius, and Mercury goes retrograde in Leo. In general, a good day to keep a light schedule and prepare for unexpected developments. Watch your temper at work and at home and avoid confrontations, ultimatums, or inflexibility. Pour your energy into spiritual reflection and creative projects and enjoy memories and a homemade meal of comfort foods.
July 27: A dramatic full Moon arrives, bringing a total lunar eclipse. Something related to career, public status or recognition, legacy, or parents will peak, and you may see a door close in one of these areas. Remember that full Moons (and the day before and day after) favor spiritual work, so plan time for meditation and prayer and be philosophical if it’s time for something to leave your life. Also, Venus in your romance, creativity, and children house connects harmoniously with Pluto in your international, publicity, and education area, so a powerful person in education, media, or from overseas may play a role in helping a child or promoting your talents, or if you’re not in a relationship you may find romance with this person.
