July Astrology – Headline News
Your Travel And Education
July opens with a lone planet in Cancer, the warm and powerful Sun, who always shines his light freely and generously to bring joy and optimism to our world.
The Moon will join the Sun in Cancer from July 11 through 13, giving greater sensitivity to general energies before the Sun changes signs on July 22.
Cancer is a water sign symbolized by the Crab, a soft and mysterious creature of land and water who carries her home, a hard shell, with her wherever she goes. Crabs are famous for moving sideways before making their move to grab what they seek, hanging on tightly with their enormous claws. The Cancer Crab mixes a soft, emotional inside and tough outside. With a secure home base, we can let our sensitive inner selves show and release the fear that may prompt us to hold on to feelings, people, and things we no longer need. When in balance, Cancer bestows precious gifts of memory and imagination that feed our creativity and allow us to share it with the world.
Find out more about Cancer in my article, Cancer Time: Feel And Change. Also, you can tune in to this sign’s watery mystery and sensitive imagination with The Cancer Meditation, an uplifting guided meditation.
For you, Scorpio, planets in Cancer always activate your ninth house of expansion, which can happen through travel, international contacts and cultures, higher education, philosophical musings and conversations, religion, or large scale media exposure through broadcasting or publicity. The Cancer planets this month can help you feel more secure about your place in the big, wide world as you learn about how others live in other parts of the globe, make contact with foreign places through food or travel or new connections, or pursue a degree or religious contemplation to understand the meaning of life. These energies also may inspire you to resolve a visa, passport, or immigration issue; seek publicity, especially internationally; or plan an extended trip overseas.
Your Career And Recognition
On July 22, the Sun leaves Cancer for Leo, which will start the month of the Lion. You’ll feel the energies shift from the emotional, imaginative power of Cancer to the heartfelt, regal world of Leo. This annual change brings a welcome warmth, charisma, and desire to show off our talents after Cancer and its brooding emotions and tendency to remain at home with its family and memories.
For you, Scorpio, planets in Leo inspire your creativity in your profession and your desire to be recognized for your talents and efforts. They also stimulate your desire to apply for an award, improve your standing in your industry, or take on greater leadership in your company or community, perhaps by running for office or seeking a promotion or new job. This area also governs your legacy and influence based on your position. As soon as the Sun enters Leo, you may feel an urge to mentor someone, contact your attorney to discuss a foundation or other ways to leave your mark on the world, or consider a role in your local community, perhaps through politics or networking.
Each year brings two sets of eclipses, six months apart. Typically, each eclipse period features a solar eclipse and a lunar eclipse; sometimes an extra eclipse may occur at these times, depending on planetary alignments. This year, we will have a third eclipse in the current set; it will happen next month. Check next month’s horoscopes for details.
An eclipse happens either at a full Moon, giving us a lunar eclipse, or a new Moon, giving us a solar eclipse.
Eclipses help speed our progress, both on the spiritual plane and the material plane, because they ramp up the power of the new or full Moon involved. They may bring dramatic news and changes to our lives if they occur in a sign and degree of the zodiac already highlighted in your birth chart.
Lunar eclipses typically point us toward the past: we see something come full circle or reach a conclusion. Solar eclipses point us toward the future: we see a door opening that leads us toward something new.
This month brings a partial solar eclipse in Cancer, 20 degrees, at the new Moon on July 12. It also features a total lunar eclipse in Aquarius, 4 degrees, at the full Moon on July 27. (NOTE: Next month will bring a solar eclipse on August 11 at 18 degrees of Leo.)
For you, Scorpio, the July 12 eclipse may bring news or a fresh start in something related to your ninth house of education, publishing, all things international such as travel, and import-export dealings, while the July 27 eclipse may spark news or closure related to your home, family, real estate, or temporary houseguests such as a foreign exchange student.
Slow Down: Mars Remains Retrograde
As last month’s horoscope explained, Mars will be retrograde all this month. Similar to Mercury retrograde, this phenomenon will coincide with a slowdown that gives us time to pause, reflect, and redo. Mars will continue its apparent backward motion for two months, until August 27.
For you, Scorpio, Mars retrograde looms large because Mars is your sign’s co-ruler, along with Pluto. See your June horoscope for more details on how Mars retrograde affects you.
Mercury Retrograde: Slow Down Some More
On July 26, Mercury will go retrograde once again, adding to Mars’s messages to slow down.
From our vantage point on Earth, it will look like Mercury is moving backwards in the sky. Although it won’t actually be moving in reverse, this Mercury retrograde period will feel like all that is associated with Mercury will be in low gear or moving backwards.
Mercury rules everything related to communication, from computers and cell phones to speaking, writing, and listening. It also governs anything with moving parts, such as electronics, cars, and appliances.
When Mercury goes retrograde, generally three times a year for three weeks at a time, the areas it rules also slow down and often experience challenges.
This retrograde occurs in Leo, a passionate fire sign that can create drama when frustrated by the inevitable surprises or obstacles that occur during a retrograde.
Prepare now by backing up your computer and other devices and updating software by mid-July. After that, you’ll begin to feel the slowdown and may see issues arise with equipment or interactions with other people.

Plan Your Month: Important Dates In July
This month brings several key dates to watch as you plan your month. Mark your calendar and take action (or rest) as recommended on the dates listed here so your efforts can bring progress in all areas.
July 5: The Sun in your international, publishing, and education area aligns beautifully with Jupiter in your personality house, so if you want to get publicity for a personal project, publish an article in an international journal, or be accepted in a degree program or study abroad opportunity, take action now. Also, Mercury in your career house faces off against Mars in your home area, so you may feel conflicted between work and family demands, or news about your job may cause tempers to rise at home.
July 8: The Sun makes another flowing angle, this time with Neptune in your romance and pleasures house. Go out for international cuisine with your special someone, work on a film or photography project with someone from a different culture, or use your connections to get more exposure for your talents and latest body of work.
July 9: Mercury in your professional house will challenge Jupiter in your house of your body, image, and personality, so your powerful personal style may rub a boss or colleague the wrong way, and someone could say something stressful that affects your energy. Avoid meetings and discussions if possible and focus instead on expanding your personal vision or upgrading your image with a makeover or new clothes. Also, loving Venus enters Virgo in your friendship, associates, clubs, and charities house. Socialize with your friends or business connections, donate to a worthy cause, attend a fundraiser, or talk to someone about joining a club or association.
July 9 – 12: The Moon enters its balsamic phase, the “dark of the Moon” time before the new Moon. Slow down and review the past month since the new Moon that arrived on June 13. Meditate, rest, and reflect on what you want to do in the coming month. Find out more about this mysterious monthly time in my Balsamic Moon Phase article. Also, this period is excellent for spiritual work, meditation, and prayer. See my article on How To Relieve Stress – Meditate At The Right Time for details.
July 10: Jupiter ends its retrograde in your personality and pet projects house, giving you a green light to feel more confident, express greater generosity and nobility, and apply ideas of recent months to a project vital to you. You also may consider an international trip for business or pleasure and decide to update your passport.
July 11: Venus in your humanitarian house makes a flowing alignment with Uranus in your committed partnership and agreements house. Your spouse may have a genius idea to help your favorite charity, or your business partner may introduce you to movers and shakers who want you to join their board. This pair also may inspire you and your partner to endow a scholarship or volunteer for a fundraiser.
July 12: A new Moon in Cancer arrives with a partial solar eclipse, signaling a new start in something related to long distance travel, higher education, publishing, broadcasting, or your religious beliefs or philosophy. Yet the Sun will face off against your ruler, mighty Pluto, in your communication house, suggesting you need to wait a day or two before initiating anything because your words may seem too forceful, or others may fear you’re trying to control them or manipulate situations for a personal agenda. If you wait, you will find the coming week and a half helpful for the new starts you desire.
July 13: Venus in your friendship house connects harmoniously with Saturn in your sibling area, giving you an opportunity to introduce a friend and unattached sibling or ask an older brother or sister to assist a pal through a letter of recommendation, job lead, or creative opportunity.
July 22: The Sun leaves Cancer for Leo, energizing your tenth house of career, honors, and community standing. Enjoy the next month’s playful, passionate energies. Also, Venus in your networking house makes a helpful alignment with Jupiter in your personality house, suggesting financial gain through your connections or help for your most meaningful personal project. Accept invitations and turn on your charm, as you can win hearts, lucrative contracts, or other benefits now.
July 24: Venus faces off against Neptune in your romance and creativity house. If you’re dating, you may feel unclear about your feelings or feel let down if your loved one cannot join you at a dinner with friends. If you’re involved in an important arts initiative, you may hear objections to your approach or have to work hard to get a straight answer about funding or contacts. If possible, wait a day or two to have meetings. This alignment also may bring concerns related to friends or children, so use charm and compassion as needed to address whatever comes your way.
July 25: The Sun in your career house squares off against Uranus in your marriage house, so your partner may object unexpectedly to your work schedule or harbor resentment about your success. Open your heart to hear what’s being said and wait at least a day to discuss concerns so you can collect your thoughts.
July 26: The Sun in Leo challenges Mars, across the sky in Aquarius, and Mercury goes retrograde in Leo. In general, a good day to keep a light schedule and prepare for unexpected developments at work and at home. Watch your temper around family, bosses, and others at work, and be careful what you say, as you may misunderstand communication or unwittingly create confusion or more work from lack of clarity. Focus on polishing current projects, be ready for last minute issues to surface, and if someone from your past gets in touch, say yes to lunch or coffee as you’ll enjoy reconnecting.
July 27: A dramatic full Moon arrives, bringing a total lunar eclipse. Something related to your home, family, ancestry, or spiritual foundation will peak, and you may see a door close in one of these areas. Remember that full Moons (and the day before and day after) favor spiritual work, so plan time for meditation and prayer and be philosophical if it’s time for something to leave your life. Also, Venus in your friendship house connects harmoniously with Pluto, your ruler, in your communication area, so if you’re interested romantically in a friend, now is your time to speak your passion as your friend is likely to be receptive to overtures. Also, a strong willed sibling may be able to help your favorite volunteer organization or could land you lucrative new contacts.
