March Astrology – Headline News
Your Travel, International, And Education Activities
As March begins, we have four planets in Pisces:
- The warm and powerful Sun, who always shines his light freely and generously to bring joy and optimism to our world
- Mercury, who governs thinking, communication, and commerce and brings playfulness and curiosity wherever he goes
- Venus, who governs love, beauty, and relationships—as well as money—and brings grace and sophistication to whatever she touches
- Neptune, who rules Pisces and governs dreams, the arts, and transcendent spirituality—and brings compassion, sensitivity, and an otherworldly quality to our lives
We also have a fifth player in Pisces, an asteroid called Chiron who is associated with where we feel wounded and how we heal and then help others based on our experiences. Chiron is well placed in Pisces, which is one of the signs associated with health.
Pisces is a water sign symbolized by the Fish: two fish swimming in opposite directions while bound together. Pisces helps us go beyond our individuality by enabling spiritual attunement, higher consciousness, and merging with creation’s essential unity. This gentle, sensitive sign allows us to sense higher truths through dreams and intuition. It also encourages us to apply these truths to help others through selfless service as well as inspire them through the arts, fantasy and other escapes from everyday life, and spiritual practices such as meditation.

For you, Cancer, Pisces always activates your ninth house of how you expand through education or philosophy and connect to the big, wide world through travel, foreign people, and broadcasting or publicity. All the Pisces planets will inspire new desires to break out of old beliefs, become more philosophical or devoted to education, and enjoy new adventures through travel or international people and cuisines.
On March 5, Mercury will leave Pisces for Aries, followed by Venus’s entry into Aries on March 6. You’ll begin to feel the energies shift away from the watery, emotional realm of Pisces toward the fiery, "let’s get going" arena of Aries. On March 20, the Sun leaves Pisces for Aries, giving us the official start to the month of the Ram.
For you, Cancer, planets in Aries power up your professional life and ambition because they put fiery passion into your tenth house of career, awards, and community standing and service. This area also governs your legacy: as soon as the Sun enters Aries, you may feel an urge to upgrade your career, run for office, or start an exciting initiative you will launch later this year.
Equinox: Happy New (Spiritual And Astrological) Year!
The third week of March not only starts a new astrological month and sign but brings a new season: spring in the northern hemisphere and fall in the southern hemisphere.
Both seasons start when the amount of daylight equals the amount of darkness, making day and night last the same amount of time. Their start days come when the Sun enters Aries and when it enters the opposite sign, Libra, and are called the equinoxes. Both equinoxes offer special energies that support spirituality and meditation.
Aries, however, brings yet another gift: as the first sign of the zodiac, it starts the astrological year. According to sages and mystics, Aries also starts a new spiritual year. That makes March 20 even more powerful and important, and you can use its energies to create a new start for yourself.
Mercury Retrograde: Slow Down, Focus On "Re," Stay Flexible
Two days later, on March 22, our solar system’s smallest planet, Mercury, goes retrograde for three weeks, until April 15. From our vantage point on Earth, it will look like Mercury is moving backwards in the sky. Although it won’t actually be moving in reverse, this Mercury retrograde period will feel like all that is associated with Mercury will be in low gear or moving backwards.
Mercury rules everything related to communication, from computers and cell phones to speaking, writing, and listening. It also governs anything with moving parts, such as electronics, cars, and appliances.
When Mercury goes retrograde, generally three times a year for three weeks at a time, the areas it rules also slow down and often experience challenges.
This retrograde occurs in Aries, a fire sign that can be impulsive and impatient because it wants to go, go, GO! So we’ll feel a "push-pull" quality of wanting to keep pushing forward yet not being able to make much progress because communication and equipment may slow, break down, or pull us back to review past projects or problems.
Prepare now by backing up your computer and other devices and updating software in the first week of March. After that, you’ll begin to feel the slowdown and may see issues arise with equipment or interactions with other people.
During the retrograde, allow yourself to slow down. Avoid starting anything new, and don’t sign contracts because you won’t have all the facts or will miss something critical and have to rework the agreement later.
Instead, focus on anything "re": review, redo, rethink, recycle, reverse, restore, and so on. This is an excellent time to dust off a past project or idea and see what you can make of it. It’s also the perfect time to contact people from the past, clean closets, polish current work, or return to anything—or anywhere—you once enjoyed.

Plan Your Month: Important Dates
This month brings several key dates to watch as you plan your month. Mark your calendar and take action (or rest) as recommended on the dates listed here so your efforts can bring progress in all areas of your life.
March 1: A full Moon in Virgo lights your third house of brothers and sisters, communication, neighbors, and travel. Something will peak around this time for you or a sibling, and you may realize you need to polish a writing project or improve how you communicate with others. Balance time with siblings and people in your community with time for classes, personal study, or vacation so your thinking can take on depth and your conversations can become more inspired, helpful, and interesting. This day (and the day before and day after) favor spiritual work: plan time for meditation and prayer. See my article on How To Relieve Stress – Meditate At The Right Time for details.
March 2: Mercury in your expansive ninth house forms a harmonious angle with Jupiter in your fifth house of creativity, romance, and children. Plan an arts vacation overseas, focus on your romantic life, enroll a child in a class on broadcasting, secure an internship in public relations or publishing, or apply for a visa or passport for a high profile cultural exchange or international business project.
March 4: The Sun joins with Neptune and Mercury merges with Venus, all in your optimistic ninth house. Consider whether your thoughts and beliefs reflect your highest ideals and spirituality, review how well you live your faith, and express higher, spiritual love in some way. Meditate on your deep connection with the entire human family—your spiritual brothers and sisters.
March 5 and 6: Mercury and Venus leave Pisces for Aries. Feel your thoughts and emotions begin to shift from introspection to outward action.
March 8: Jupiter goes retrograde until July 10. This giant, optimistic planet entered Scorpio on October 10, 2017, bringing expansion to your house of children, romance, the arts, performance, and creativity. Perhaps you conceived or had a child since then, or you may have started a new sport, gained a new love interest, started an ambitious creative project, or joined a community theatre. With the retrograde, you have four months to review your relationships with children (and your inner child) as well as your hobbies, artistic talents, and love life and make changes or improvements if needed.
March 11: Mars makes a helpful angle with Uranus in Aries, while the Sun nods benevolently to Pluto. Taking initiative at work can create exciting career opportunities, and your spouse or a powerful business partner or advisor may help you get into a graduate program or secure an international contract or job.
March 13: The Sun in your philosophical ninth house links to Jupiter in your house of love, creativity, and children, inspiring you and a child to take a class together or plan a joint trip overseas or allowing you to tap international connections to get publicity for your artistry or begin a new romance.
March 13 – 17: Your ruler, the Moon, enters its balsamic phase, the "dark of the Moon" time before the new Moon. Slow down, review the past month since the new Moon of February 15, and enjoy a bit of daydreaming about what you want to do in the coming month. This period is excellent for spiritual work, meditation, and prayer. Find out more about this mysterious monthly time in my Balsamic Moon Phase article. Also, this period is excellent for spiritual work, meditation, and prayer. See my article on How To Relieve Stress – Meditate At The Right Time for details.
March 17: A new Moon in Pisces brings your best time all year to plan international travel or resolve visa or passport concerns, apply to a college or doctoral program, contact people in broadcasting, or launch a major publicity campaign. Also, Mars leaves expansive Sagittarius for earthy Capricorn in your committed partnerships and agreements house, bringing sizzle to your marriage as well as drive to sign new business partners, agents, or advisors. Mars’s move also could coincide with new competitors or challenges from others, so keep your cool and bide your time if provoked and focus your will on the long term to avoid unnecessary squabbles or litigation.
March 20: The Sun enters Aries, bringing a new astrological month, a new season, the spring equinox (fall equinox in the southern hemisphere), and a new spiritual year. Make time to meditate on this highly significant day and feel the joyful energy of new beginnings as the Sun lights up Aries. This "power day" offers natural energies supporting spiritual work and planning for the year ahead.
March 22: Mercury goes retrograde in Aries. Use your powerful thoughts to overcome impatience and let yourself slow down, assess your career and any needed improvements, review your professional standing, and polish your resume or important projects so you will be ready to move ahead after the retrograde. Wait until April 17 or later to sign contracts or start anything new. Get details on making the most of this period in my Mercury Retrograde Dates, Advice article.
March 23 and 24: Venus and the Sun in Aries make difficult alignments with Pluto and Mars in your partnership, agreements, and competitor house. Your partner may object to something about your job or career, or you may feel torn between a work obligation and personal desire. You also might feel pressured from a business advisor or harsh competitive climate in your industry. Keep a low profile, avoid disputes, and make no assumptions. If a partner makes unreasonable demands, listen calmly and use your sensitivity to read between the lines rather than take anything personally. Table any decisions; instead, give yourself a night to sleep on what you learn before responding.
March 28: Venus links happily with Uranus in Aries. A professional relationship could shift for the better, or an associate may further your career. You also may have a brilliant insight that helps you create an elegant, harmonious solution to a longstanding problem.
March 30: Venus leaves Aries for Taurus. Accept every invitation from friends and for networking events, as your charm will strengthen bonds and attract new connections who may yield lucrative business leads. Dress with care and creative flair to present your best self in every social situation.
March 31: A second full Moon this month arrives, this time in Libra. Something related to your home, family, parents, or property will peak and give you clarity. This full Moon makes stressful alignments with several planets in your marriage and partnership house as well as the Sun and Mercury in your career house. Be cautious with these volatile energies, as hasty speech or actions could affect your marriage or business agreements, professional reputation, family, or home. Time spent on personal projects, polishing your image with new clothes or a flattering hairstyle, or attending to health concerns can act as safety valves to channel these powerful energies constructively. Also, remember that full Moons (and the day before and day after) favor spiritual work, so plan time for meditation and prayer.
As you can see, March is filled with high contrast—and wave after wave of high energies. Use the guidance here to ride this month’s waves so you can reach April’s shore with pride in how you handled March’s challenges and made the most of its many opportunities.
Happy March, Cancer! I wish you a wonderful month!
